Dr. Atul Goel, a top official from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), has advised taking general precautions against respiratory infections amid reports of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China.
Dr. Goel emphasized that there is no need for alarm, describing HMPV as similar to other respiratory viruses that cause common cold symptoms. He noted that while the very young and very old may experience flu-like symptoms, data from December 2024 shows no significant increase in respiratory outbreaks in India.
He encouraged basic preventive measures, such as:
- Avoiding contact with others if symptomatic.
- Using a separate handkerchief or towel for coughing and sneezing.
- Following standard treatment for colds or fevers.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring respiratory and seasonal influenza cases and collaborating with international agencies.
Although the HMPV outbreak in China has caused global concern, Indian health officials have reassured the public that hospitals are well-prepared for seasonal respiratory infections and that the current situation does not warrant panic.
