India is witnessing growing concerns over Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases as reports of infections surface ahead of significant public events. With just a week remaining for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, health officials are monitoring the situation closely. Among the latest cases, an 80-year-old man in Mumbai tested positive for HMPV after being hospitalized with symptoms including fever and shortness of breath. This case is particularly noteworthy as the patient had no travel history, raising concerns about local transmission.
So far, 11 confirmed HMPV cases have been reported across the country. These include two cases each from Bengaluru and Chennai, three from Kolkata, two from Nagpur, one from Mumbai, and another from Gujarat. The Union Health Ministry has reassured the public that HMPV is not a new virusāit was first identified in 2001 and has been circulating globally for years. According to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, the virus, which primarily spreads through respiratory droplets, can affect people of all age groups, with heightened activity during winter and early spring.
With millions of devotees expected to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela, health officials are working proactively to prevent any potential spread of the virus. The Union Health Ministry has expressed confidence in its preparedness to address any surge in respiratory infections. Meanwhile, Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling also urged citizens to remain calm, highlighting the state’s readiness to welcome visitors for Pravasi Bharatiya Divas without fear of HMPV.
