
Indian President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Padma Awards 2025 to ten individuals in the field of medicine and healthcare. Announced on the eve of Republic Day, these awards recognise outstanding service and innovative contributions in medical science, patient care, and public health.
Padma Awards are among the highest civilian awards in the country. The ceremony was held on Monday in Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
Here’s the list of Padma Awards 2025 in the field of medicine and healthcare
Padma Vibhushan
Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy (Telangana): A gastroenterologist and founder of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad, Dr. Reddy has helped advance therapeutic endoscopy and gastroenterology in India. With this award, he becomes the first Indian doctor to receive all three Padma honours – Padma Shri (2002), Padma Bhushan (2016), and Padma Vibhushan (2025).

Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram (Kerala): Dr. Periappuram is the founder of the Heart Care Foundation. He also performed Kerala’s first successful heart transplant.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra (Odisha): A celebrated neurosurgeon, Dr. Mahapatra led India’s first successful craniopagus surgery on conjoined twins Jaga and Kalia at AIIMS, New Delhi, in 2017.
Dr. Budhendra Kumar Jain (Madhya Pradesh): Dr. Jain, an ophthalmologist, was awarded for providing quality and affordable eye care to rural communities.
Dr. Hemant Kumar (Bihar): A leading nephrologist, Dr. Kumar has been credited with spreading awareness about kidney disease in the region.
Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane (Karnataka): An oncologist recognised for her work in advancing breast cancer research and providing free treatment and counseling to economically disadvantaged patients.
Dr. Soniya Nityanand (Uttar Pradesh): Dr. Nityanand is a renowned immunologist specialising in hematology. She is known for her research in stem cell transplantation and hematological disorders.
Prof. Neerja Bhatla (Delhi): Dr. Bhatia has been recognised for her pioneering work in the prevention and management of cervical cancer and advancing women’s health.
Sheikha Shaikha Ali Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (Kuwait): She is an international practitioner awarded for promoting yoga in the Middle East and South Asia. She is also the founder of Daratma, the first licensed yoga studio in Kuwait.
Dr. Vilas Dangre (Maharashtra): A homeopath honoured for over 50 years of treating patients, despite losing his eyesight.
