Acidity During Pregnancy: Many pregnant women in India face acidity or heartburn. It feels like a burning in the chest and can be really uncomfortable. If you’re going through it, you’re not alone. Most expecting mothers think this at some point. Here’s why it happens and what you can safely do to feel better.
Why do you get acidity during pregnancy?
When you’re pregnant, your body undergoes many physical and hormonal changes. These changes can lead to acidity.

- Hormone Changes: Your body produces more progesterone during pregnancy. This hormone relaxes muscles, including the one that keeps stomach acid from going up your food pipe. So acid can move up, causing that burning feeling.
- Baby’s Growth: As your baby grows, your uterus pushes against your stomach. This pressure makes it easier for acid to rise, especially in the second and third trimesters.
- Slower Digestion: Pregnancy slows down digestion. Food stays longer in your stomach, which increases acid and the chances of heartburn.
Safe and natural ways to reduce acidity:
You can manage acidity at home with some simple changes. These methods are safe for both you and your baby.
Eat Small, Frequent Meals: Instead of three big meals, eat smaller ones more often. Don’t rush; chew food well. Avoid eating close to bedtime. Try to eat your last meal at least 3 hours before you go to sleep.
Watch What You Eat: Avoid foods that trigger acidity, like spicy curries, fried snacks, tomatoes, citrus fruits, chocolate, and even too much tea or coffee. Eat plain, soothing foods like rice, banana, curd, and toast. A glass of cold milk or a spoon of ghee with rice can also help. Ginger (adrak) in small amounts may also ease your stomach.
Sleep with Your Head Raised: Use extra pillows or raise the head side of your bed. Sleeping on your left side is also better; it helps keep acid down and supports digestion.

Stay Upright After Eating: Don’t lie down just after a meal. Sit straight or go for a short walk. Let your body properly digest the food.
Wear Loose Clothes: Avoid tight clothes that press on your belly. Choose soft, loose outfits that keep you comfortable.
When to call your doctor?
Acidity is common in pregnancy, but you should talk to your doctor if:
