United States President Donald Trump, 79, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common vascular condition, following a recent medical evaluation prompted by mild swelling in his lower legs, the White House confirmed on Thursday.
At a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared details from a letter written by Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Barbabella. An ultrasound revealed the venous condition, a common occurrence in individuals over 70.

“There is no evidence of more serious conditions such as deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease,” Leavitt stated. Additional tests also ruled out heart failure, kidney issues, and systemic illnesses, she added.
According to the US National Library of Medicine, chronic venous insufficiency occurs when the veins in the legs struggle to return blood to the heart, often due to weakened or damaged valves. While the condition can worsen over time, it is manageable, particularly when identified early.
Medical experts say the condition is benign in most cases but can lead to complications like leg ulcers if left unmanaged. Common treatments include compression stockings, elevating the legs, regular walking, and maintaining a healthy weight.
Leavitt noted that Trump is not experiencing discomfort from the condition. She also addressed public speculation over bruising on the back of his hand, which had recently drawn attention in photos. The bruising, she said, is consistent with minor soft tissue irritation caused by frequent handshaking and aspirin use, which Trump takes as part of his cardiovascular care routine.
The announcement comes amid growing public interest in Trump’s health, especially as he prepares for upcoming political and diplomatic engagements. The White House emphasised that the disclosures were intended to provide transparency and address speculation.
Trump underwent a comprehensive physical in April, involving more than a dozen medical specialists. That report did not mention venous insufficiency, noting normal blood flow, no swelling, and full range of motion in his joints.
The White House insists that Trump remains in excellent health and continues to maintain an active schedule. “You see his energy every day,” Leavitt told reporters.
