India reported 203 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the country’s active caseload to 3,961, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s Monday update.
West Bengal reported the highest number of new infections among states, with 82 cases, followed by Kerala with 64 and Delhi with 61. Two fresh deaths were reported from Kerala and Karnataka, raising the total tally to 28 COVID-19 deaths in India since January 2025.
Kerala, currently the worst-hit state, accounts for 1,435 active cases, followed by Maharashtra (506), Delhi (483), Gujarat (338), and West Bengal (331).
The rise in active cases has been steep: from just 257 on May 22, the count surged to 1,010 by May 26 and then more than tripled to 3,961 by Monday (June 2).
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reported that genome sequencing of samples from western and southern regions of the country has confirmed the presence of new subvariants of Omicron, the strain responsible for the major Covid surge in India in 2022.
Four subvariants of Omicron (LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB.1.8.1) have been found in the country. The first three have been found in most cases.
ICMR Director General Dr Rajiv Behl said that while there is a resurgence of coronavirus infections in the country, there’s nothing to be worried about. “The severity of cases remains low, and there is no need for panic at this stage. We have been closely monitoring the situation. We should be vigilant currently, but there is no cause to worry,” he said.
