Tooth removal from nose: A team at AIIMS Gorakhpur’s Department of Dentistry has successfully removed a tooth that developed inside the nasal cavity of a four-year-old boy from Chauri Chaura, believed to be the first such case managed locally, procedures that until now typically required referral to Delhi or Lucknow.
The child had endured six months of severe pain near the upper jaw and nose despite multiple consultations in Gorakhpur and Deoria. On evaluation at AIIMS, Assistant Professor (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) Dr Shailesh Kumar ordered detailed scans that revealed an ectopic intranasal tooth with an associated jaw cyst, posing a complex surgical challenge.

Following clearance from Director & CEO Dr Vibha Dutta, the child was taken up for surgery under general anaesthesia, with special preparations by the anaesthesiology team. The operation was led by Dr Shailesh Kumar, supported by Dr Praveen Kumar (Senior Resident), Dr Priyanka Tripathi (Junior Resident), Dr Santosh Sharma (Head of Anaesthesia), Dr Ganesh Nimje (Associate Professor), and nursing officer Pankaj Devi.
Post-operatively, the child is stable and under observation in a specialised ward. Doctors said timely intervention helped avert potential complications, including facial deformity, breathing difficulties, and psychological distress.
“A facial injury a year ago may have contributed to this condition. Early specialist evaluation might have prevented surgery,” Dr Shailesh said, urging parents not to ignore facial or jaw injuries and to consult an oral and maxillofacial surgeon promptly.
AIIMS Gorakhpur plans to document the case for submission to a peer-reviewed journal, citing its rarity and the centre’s capability to manage complex paediatric maxillofacial conditions. Clinicians involved stressed the importance of early, accurate diagnosis for children with persistent oral or facial pain, noting that specialised care can be critical to better outcomes.
