Assam Reports First Suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) Death; Official Confirmation Awaited.
Believed to be Assam’s first death occurrence of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), an uncommon but serious neurological illness, a Guwahati hospital has reported. Though, the state health department has not formally validated the case yet.
Guillain-barré syndrome (GBS) is what?
GBS is the disorder in which the body immune system targets the peripheral nerve system, causing an initial start of numbness, weakening, or even paralysis. Usually following viral or bacterial infections causing fever or diarrhea, it starts occasionally in relation to immunization or respiratory infection.
Case of Guwahati
The patient was in the private hospital in Guwahati for treatment. Her death from this illness resulted from complications even with some medical intervention. Although the hospital has called this the first GBS-associated fatality in Assam, the state health department has not confirmed nor acknowledged the incidence to date.
Increasing Cases of Issues
Though GBS is not a typical occurrence, doctors usually argue that early detection and treatment alone determine how this disease is managed overall. Time is therefore always a factor. Apart from IVG treatment, the several drugs given for such a condition include plasmapheresis or plasma exchange. Though in very terrible circumstances, respiratory failure, paralysis, or even death can arrive without therapy, these less the severity of the symptoms and the possibilities of recovery.
Official from Health Alert
With the recorded case, health authorities are more likely to search for other comparable events and so advise the public on early diagnosis and an immediate reaction. Should one discover unusual weakness or tingling or inability to move, one should contact a doctor since such could be the first indication of GBS.
More about this incident would be revealed once Assam’s health agency looks at the matter.
