Dr. Reddy notes thirty years ago that cervical cancer accounted for 50–60% of all cancers in India. That percentage has dropped to 22% with knowledge and medical technology at hand; 30% represents cases of breast cancer.
Since the vaccination is horizontally acquired from men to women through sexual contact, it is advised for the female population aged 9 to 26 before their first sexual contact. While 80% dissolve on their own, untreated the remaining 20% can develop cancer.
Vaccine for Both sexes
Apart from cervical cancer, the HPV vaccination stops other diseases caused by HPV including anal cancer, penile cancer in men, and genital warts. “This is why guys ought to also be vaccinated,” Dr. Reddy said.
