Pune recorded 22 suspected cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare but serious neurological condition, under which a patient’s own immune system starts attacking the peripheral nerves, leaving him/ her unable to move, among other debilitating effects.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own nerves, usually after an infection. Early symptoms usually are muscle weakness, tingling in the limbs, and coordination difficulty. If untreated, GBS can progress to more serious complications, such as paralysis.
According to a senior health official, Dr. Ramesh Waghmare, “while the cause of the suspected cases is still unknown, we are consulting the experts to confirm whether an infection or environmental condition has caused these suspected cases.
Many of the patients reported show early signs of being cured with supportive care from the health services. However, health authorities caution that in most instances, early diagnosis and proper treatment can easily ward off any serious outcomes.
Health officials are encouraging residents to remain vigilant but not panic. Individuals experiencing unusual weakness, tingling sensations, or loss of motor function are encouraged to report immediately to their medical providers. Preventive measures such as maintaining personal hygiene, avoiding exposure to infections, and staying informed about symptoms are of paramount importance at this time.
We are taking all precautions to take care of the situation and people affected. The health system is actually capable of handling such cases, and we will keep the public in the picture as we get the updates,” Dr. Waghmare said while reassuring the public.
Though GBS is still an extremely rare condition, such suspected cases have reminded people to monitor neurological symptoms and not delay medical intervention.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing situation as we await further findings from the NIV.
