India is seeing a rise in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that typically emerges during winter and early spring. Two suspected cases have been reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra, adding to three confirmed cases in Karnataka and Gujarat. Health Minister JP Nadda has reassured the public, emphasizing that there is no need for panic as India’s health surveillance systems are vigilant and well-equipped.
HMPV, a flu-like virus first identified in 2001, usually causes mild symptoms like coughing, fever, and nasal congestion. While it primarily affects children under five, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, experts say that most cases resolve within 5–7 days with proper care.
Dr. Meenu Singh, Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, emphasized that HMPV is not a new threat and generally poses minimal risk to the general population. She highlighted the importance of hydration, proper care for vulnerable groups, and following basic preventive measures such as social distancing and hand hygiene.
The Union Health Ministry has directed states and union territories to enhance surveillance for respiratory illnesses like Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI). Awareness campaigns are underway to educate the public on maintaining hand hygiene, avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, and practicing respiratory etiquette.
Globally, WHO officials have pointed out that the rise in respiratory infections, including HMPV, is typical during winter. The situation remains under control with no signs of a COVID-19-like outbreak.
